Gospel Reading for June 21, 2025 – Matthew 6: 24-34

WE DO NOT TRUST GOD

Jesus said to his disciples: “No one can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds in the sky; they do not sow or reap, they gather nothing into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are not you more important than they? Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life-span? Why are you anxious about clothes? Learn from the way the wild flowers grow. They do not work or spin. But I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was clothed like one of them. If God so clothes the grass of the field, which grows today and is thrown into the oven tomorrow, will he not much more provide for you, O you of little faith? So do not worry and say, ‘What are we to eat?’ or ‘What are we to drink?’ or ‘What are we to wear?’ All these things the pagans seek. Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides. Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for a day is its own evil.”

————

When we worry too much, especially about temporal things in life, it is as if WE DO NOT TRUST GOD, our Creator and Giver of all the things we need. It is as if all the burden to sustain our lives fall on our shoulders because we cannot depend on anybody, even on God.

Jesus tells us to seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given us. This is because when we seek him above everything else, he becomes more important than material things, than mammon. We work to sustain our bodily needs, but more importantly, we work to use the gifts and talents we received from him so we may do our part in contributing to the good of humanity and making our world a better place. When our focus is on using our gifts, we will be happy and willing to work, and in the process develop our skills. But when we work for the compensation/money we will be receiving, we will be unhappy when we think we are not compensated enough for the work we do. Some people even do not do their work well, thinking that it is what their employer deserves, but in the process downgrade themselves. Some of us complain at work or come home to our families very tired and unhappy.

Too much worrying is not helpful at all because it cannot improve any problematic situation. All we need is to do our best, and ask God to do the rest. As Jesus says, let tomorrow take care of itself.

The song “TOMORROW” from the musical, “ANNIE” sang by orphan Annie is one inspiring song for worriers. Although not a religious song, it supports what Jesus is saying –
The sun’ll come out, tomorrow;
Bet your bottom dollar, that tomorrow
there’ll be sun!
Just thinking about, tomorrow
clears away the cobwebs, and the sorrow
‘Til there’s none!
When I’m stuck with a day
that’s gray and lonely,
I just stick out my chin
and grin and say –
The sun’ll come out, tomorrow
so you gotta hang on ’til tomorrow,
come what may!
Tomorrow! Tomorrow! I love ya, tomorrow.
You’re always a day away!

Lord God, help us to always place our trust in you!
