Whenever a decision has to be made, the perennial questions surface: “Is it the majority? What does the majority say? What does the survey show?”
Jesus was asked similar questions in the gospel: “Are there many who will be saved? Will only a few be saved?” These are tricky questions. If Jesus answers, “Many will be saved,” then many will think that they will be part of this number, since “we are not really that bad.” On the other hand, if Jesus says, “Only a few will be saved,” then many will be discouraged and think, “I am not really completely good. I have lost my chance and I have no hope of being saved.”
Jesus does not answer the questions directly. Rather, he says,
“You take care of yourself. You make your relationship with God healthy and strong. And that is going to be your own assurance of being saved.”
If each one will take care of their relationship with God, then many will be saved. If each one will be negligent of their relationship with God, then very few will be saved. The answer to the questions does not depend on God. The answer to the questions depends on you.
If you are open to a relationship with Jesus, to a friendship with Jesus, and if each one will be open, then many will be saved. Isn’t it true that we still fall into the same temptation of thinking, “What does the Social Weather Station say? What do the surveys show? Who is the most popular?” And then we join the bandwagon. But morality and doing God’s will are not a matter of surveys or popularity ratings. Popularity does not matter in God’s kingdom. What is important to God is your own personal and individual commitment to him.
