Gospel Reading for July 18, 2024 – Matthew 11: 28-30

SO IRONIC

Jesus said: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”

————

Most of the time, the reason why we are burdened in life is because we worry about so many things. We create needs that we do not really need. We think life is a competition and we have to get to the top. We think that security lies in having wealth, in being looked up to, in being the best among the rest. It is SO IRONIC if the things that burden us in life are those we can live without.

Jesus became human so he had to labor and be burdened, especially during his ministry when he went from place to place preaching and healing the sick. He knows how rest and rejuvenation is very important for us to survive. During his ministry, he usually rested by going up the mountain or deserted places and communicate with the Father. This was how he was able to cope with fatigue or weariness. In the reading of today, he invites us to go to him during times like this. As the Father gave him rest, he will give us rest. As the Father lightened his burden, he will also lighten ours.

Thank you, Lord Jesus. Teach us to be meek and humble of heart!
