Gospel Reading for June 05, 2026 – Mark 12: 35-37

ONCE AND FOR ALL

As Jesus was teaching in the temple area he said, “How do the scribes claim that the Christ is the son of David? David himself, inspired by the Holy Spirit, said: The Lord said to my lord,
‘Sit at my right hand until I place your enemies under your feet.’ David himself calls him ‘lord’; so how is he his son?” The great crowd heard this with delight.

————

In Psalm 110, David refers to the Messiah as “my Lord.” If the Messiah were merely David’s son, why would David call him “my Lord”? Jesus was indeed the long-awaited descendant of David foretold by the prophets. He came from the house of David because he had to be born into the world as a man. Yet Jesus is far more than a descendant of David. As the Son of God, he existed with the Father from all eternity. God has no beginning and no end—He is eternal.

What does this mean for us as Christians? It means that through Jesus, the broken relationship between God and humanity, first brought about by sin in the Book of Genesis, has been restored. By becoming man, suffering, dying, and rising again, Jesus redeemed humankind ONCE AND FOR ALL.

What Jesus said to Mary Magdalene outside the empty tomb beautifully expresses this restored relationship:

“Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God’” (John 20:17).
Through Christ, we are no longer separated from God but are invited to become his children and heirs to eternal life.

Thank you, Lord Jesus, for becoming the sacrificial Lamb who took away the sins of the world. Through your infinite love and sacrifice, you opened for us the way to the Father and gave us the hope of eternal life!
