Suportado ng Association of Major Religious Superiors in the Philippines (AMRSP) on Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation (JPICC), ang Order of Friars Minors (OFM), the Basilica Minore de San Pedro Bautista at ang Parish Pastoral Council ng San Pedro Bautista sa pagtutol sa panukalang palitan ang pangalan ng Del Monte Avenue sa Quezon City bilang Fernando Poe Jr. Avenue.
Sa pahayag ng AMRSP-JPICC, kinikilala nito ang ambag ni Philippine National Artist Fernando Poe, Jr., sa sambayanang Filipino ngunit mas malaki ang naging ambag ng Del Monte Avenue sa kasaysayan ng bansa.
“The achievements and magnanimity of Philippine National Artist Fernando Poe, Jr., will never be forgotten. He has his life and achievements captured on film and in print. Fernando Poe, Jr. shall always be loved by the Filipino people. But, renaming the road Del Monte Avenue to Fernando Poe, Jr, Avenue will totally obliterate the significance of one of the very first settlements of Quezon City established in 1590: the San Francisco Del Monte, which together with Balintawak and Tirad Pass, now Project 8, are silent witnesses to the unfolding of Philippine history,”pahayag ng AMRSP-JPICC.
Kamakailan ay inaprubahan ng Senate Public Works Committee sa pamumuno ni Senator Manny Pacquiao ang Senate Bill 1822 na inihain ni Senador Lito Lapid na layong isunod sa pangalan ni FPJ ang Del Monte Avenue.
Layunin ng mambabatas na maipakilala si Da King o Hari ng pelikulang Filipino sa mga susunod na henerasyon at alalahanin ang ambag nito kung saan gumanap ito sa halos tatlong daang pelikula, naging direktor, prodyuser at iskritor sa mahigit apat na dekada sa industriya.
Iginiit ng religious group na ang pagpapalit ng pangalan sa naturang lugar ay maituturing na pagbalewala sa kasaysayan.
“Renaming Del Monte Avenue, will negate the historical, cultural, religious and social importance of the first settlement Quezon City, the San Francisco del Monte.”pahayag ng grupo
Batay sa kasaysayan, ang kasalukuyang Minore Basilica de San Pedro Bautista Church ay ipinangalan kay San Pedro Bautista, ang Franciscanong pari na nagtayo ng settlement sa San Francisco Del Monte na ginamit na kampo ng rebeldeng Chinese noong 1639.
Noong 1895, nilisan ng mga Franciscanong pari ang simbahan nang gamitin ito ng mga rebolusyunaryong mga Filipino sa tinaguriang “The Cry of Balintawak” habang 1898 inokupa naman ito ng mga sundalong Amerikano sa kasagsagan ng Philippine-American War.
Kinilala ng religious group ang ambag ng mga misyonerong Franciscano sa pagpapalaganap ng Kristiyanismo sa Pilipinas sa pangunguna n San Pedro Bautista na nanirahan sa San Francisco Del Monte na dapat kilalanin ng mga mambabatas.
“As religious sisters and priests, we affirm, recognize, and acknowledge the historical contributions of the Order of Friars Minor in the acculturation and indigenization of Christianity in the Philippines; To rename Del Monte Avenue is to start the process of denying 400 years of history that is San Francisco Del Monte, from which Del Monte Avenue is derived. We appeal to our esteemed Senators and government officials to acknowledge the rich cultural, social, and religious heritage of San Francisco Del Monte and retain the name Del Monte Avenue,” dagdag pa ng AMRSP-JPICC.
