Gospel Reading for May 8, 2024 – John 16: 12-15

REAL

Jesus said to his disciples: “I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming. He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. Everything that the Father has is mine; for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.”

————

“I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now.”

Without the Spirit, how could the apostles remember so much about the life and teachings of Jesus? How could the evangelists have written the gospels that bring us back to more than 2,000 years ago? How could a former persecutor of Christians, St. Paul, write so many inspirational letters to the early Christian Church? How can pastors, preachers, teachers be inspired enough to make the gospel be known and understood, and help people, students, and even non-believers realize that JESUS WAS REAL.

Without the Spirit, many of Jesus’ disciples would not have persevered because of severe persecution and would not have had the courage to die a martyr’s death. There were so many martyrs, so many willing to die for the Faith. Were it not for the Spirit of God, they wouldn’t have had that much courage and love for God! This is why the devil can never win in this battle of good and evil. The Spirit of God is eternally present among us!

Come, Holy Spirit, fill our hearts with courage and love!
