Gospel Reading for May 24, 2024 – Mark 10: 1-12
UNION THAT IS BLESSED
Jesus came into the district of Judea and across the Jordan. Again crowds gathered around him and, as was his custom, he again taught them. The Pharisees approached him and asked, “Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?” They were testing him. He said to them in reply, “What did Moses command you?” They replied, “Moses permitted a husband to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her.” But Jesus told them, “Because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate.” In the house the disciples again questioned Jesus about this. He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

Perhaps, some of us feel that laws curtail our freedom, hence, we tend to rebel and go against them. Except for some cultural traditions, laws are meant to give freedom where it is due. We are not free to do just anything we want because our freedom ends where the freedom of others begin. If the actions we make due to our desire for freedom hurts or causes damage to others, then, we are not free to do them.
Loving relationships are formed and nurtured into a FAMILY, hence a man leaves his parents to be joined to his wife, and the two become one flesh, and God-willing, they will be producing offsprings, who they will hopefully, bring up according to God’s will, so they may be able to contribute their own gifts to the world, to humanity. It is from THE FAMILY that LIFE SPRINGS FORTH, hence God made them male and female. God was the one who joined them, therefore, it is the UNION THAT IS BLESSED BY HIM. The reading of today shows very clearly how Jesus was protecting THE FAMILY because the family is the NUCLEUS OF THE ENTIRE HUMAN RACE.
Bless O Lord, our families, that they put you at the center of their lives and remain strong and steadfast in their faith in you amidst all the extreme challenges it is facing nowadays!
