WAKING UP
After Jesus had spoken, a Pharisee invited him to dine at his home. He entered and reclined at table to eat. The Pharisee was amazed to see that he did not observe the prescribed washing before the meal. The Lord said to him, “Oh you Pharisees! Although you cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish, inside you are filled with plunder and evil. You fools! Did not the maker of the outside also make the inside? But as to what is within, give alms, and behold, everything will be clean for you.”

The Pharisees were so preoccupied with rituals that, for them, made them compliant with the Laws of God, and these rituals became more important than the reasons behind them. It is understandable, then, that Jesus’ words were very harsh. They needed WAKING UP. This is what happens when Tradition becomes merely a ritual and loses its meaning.
Imagine if our Sunday Eucharistic Celebration became merely a ritual and did not affect the way we live, the way we treat our family members, and the way we interact with other people. What would Jesus be telling us?
Lord Jesus, may we be like you both inside and outside. Amen.
