Gospel Reading for April 18, 2026 – John 6: 16-21

GREATER

When it was evening, the disciples of Jesus went down to the sea, embarked in a boat, and went across the sea to Capernaum. It had already grown dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. The sea was stirred up because a strong wind was blowing. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they began to be afraid. But he said to them, “It is I. Do not be afraid.” They wanted to take him into the boat, but the boat immediately arrived at the shore to which they were heading.

Even after the Resurrection, Jesus continued to make his presence known to the apostles. He understood how difficult it was for them to grasp what had happened and to discern what lay ahead. Gently, he reassured them: “It is I. Do not be afraid.”

When we consider the suffering and persecution they endured as bearers of the Word of God, it may seem, at first glance, that it was not worth it. But when we remember that life on earth is fleeting, and that what awaits us is eternal life, everything changes. It becomes clear that it is indeed worth it—not only to endure hardships, but to spend our time on earth doing what benefits others and gives glory to God.

Often, our problems feel overwhelming because we believe we must face them alone—that we cannot depend on anyone but ourselves. Yet what we truly need is to turn to the Holy Spirit, asking for clarity and guidance in the steps we must take. Above all, we are called to listen to Jesus, who lovingly invites us: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest…” (Matthew 11:28–30).

If we continually seek to remain close to Jesus in our daily lives, we have no reason to fear. He is GREATER than all our problems—and those problems, after all, are only temporary.
Lord Jesus, thank you for your reassuring words. Thank you for helping us carry life’s burdens.
