#Helpie, an on-air and social media campaign of Radio Veritas aimed at promoting altruism and charity was recently concluded in an awarding ceremony at the Radio Veritas studio in Quezon City.

Out of fifty seven entries, photos of the BA Communication students from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila were selected by the organizers and campaign partners as the most creative and heartwarming photos that promotes acts of charity. All winners were given gift certificates from campaign partners Bioessense, Chicken Deli and Tropical Hut in the awarding ceremony on September 30, 2016.

In an interview with Radio Veritas, Almira Joy D. San Juan who won the first place said that she wants to show through her photo that if children can give a hand, then the adults can do much more help to others.

“Dito po natin makikita na bakit sila yung mga bata, bakit sila na hindi pa masyadong maalam, natutong magtulungan, hindi naghihilahan pababa… Dapat tayo, tayo ang magsimula, tayo ang magtulungan, dahil dito tayo uunlad, dito uunlad ang Pilipinas,” Ms. San Juan said.
For her part, Jean Katrina C. Ruby who bagged the second place said that she joined the campaign to encourage other netizens to help other people and inspire them to continue living in spite of the difficulty they are going through.

“Sumali po ako sa #Helpie challenge para maipakita ang realidad ng buhay na ang kapalaran ay hindi laging pabor sa buhay ng isang tao. Kapag tinulungan mo sila, parang nagiging pagasa sa kanila yun na magpatuloy sa buhay,” the second place winner said.

On the other hand, the third place winner, Jhastine Philamer L. Punongbayan used #Helpie as an opportunity to help Rolando Disanta and his son Richard Disanta who is suffering from convulsion epilepsy syndrome. He said that Mr. Disanta and his son are staying in front of the National Shrine of St.Jude Thaddeus in Manila and chiefly rely on charitable donations to survive. He hoped that his photo would reach Mr. Disanta’s family to help them.

“Nung aking nalaman na may ganitong paraan ang Veritas na mayroong tyansa na makapag bahagi ang bawat isa ng isang #Helpie ay agad pumasok sa aking isip ang mag-amang ito na ang tanging hangad ay matustusan ang kanilang pang araw-araw na pangangailangan,” an excerpt of his Facebook post for the campaign.

Meanwhile, the campaign partners were very happy for being able to support this kind of campaign and promote giving as a way of life.
“Actually natutuwa kami dahil sa campaign and we are encouraging especially the youth kasi sila ‘yung talagang active sa social media na ipagpatuloy nyo lang ‘yung ganitong pagtulong,”said Ms. Roby Rose Soriano, Marketing Communication Officer of Bio essence.

The Marketing Officer of Chicken Deli, Mr. Winkle John Buan also said that the management of Chicken Deli is very supportive to this kind of campaign and will never get tired of helping others with all the means they can.

“Napakasarap sa pakiramdam. We are so blessed na naging part kami ng project na ‘to… Tayong lahat wag tayong magdalawang isip tumulong sa kapwa natin. Kahit sa isang maliit na bagay lang,” Mr. Buan said.

The #Helpie campaign which ran from September 5-16, 2016 aimed to contribute in the promotion of selflessness and mutual understanding ‎among netizens by changing social media posting paradigms from #SELFIE to #HELPIE. It was also a part of the celebration for the International Day of Charity and the canonization of Saint Mother Teresa of Kolkata who is known for her works of charity and the founder of Missionaries of Charity, religious congregation who gives free service to the poorest of the poor”. Mother Teresa was canonized on September 5, 2016.
