Gospel Reading for June 06, 2026 – Mark 12: 38-44

IN OUR HEARTS

In the course of his teaching Jesus said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes and accept greetings in the marketplaces, seats of honor in synagogues, and places of honor at banquets. They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext, recite lengthy prayers. They will receive a very severe condemnation.”

He sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury.

Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, “Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood.”

What truly matters in our relationship with God is what is IN OUR HEARTS. God is Truth itself; therefore, there is no room for hypocrisy, pretense, or deceit before him.

We should never think that because we give large donations to the Church, we are greater or more generous than others. It is only fitting that those who have received more should also give more. As Jesus said in Luke 12: 48, “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.”

Neither should we think that because we support the Church financially, the parish priest, the Church community, or even God somehow owes us something in return. Everything we have comes from God—our abilities, talents, opportunities, and even our very lives. We cannot boast of being self-made, for God alone is the Creator. We did not create ourselves.

It is good to remain mindful of the countless blessings we receive each day. In doing so, we cultivate grateful hearts that are eager to share with those in need the blessings that God has so generously bestowed upon us.

Lord God, thank you for your boundless love and for your constant care for your people. May our hearts always be filled with gratitude, humility, and generosity!
