MANILA CATHEDRAL
My dear brother’s and sister’s in Christ, let us give thanks to God for gathering us one big family this morning, welcome to the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, Manila Cathedral.
We are celebrating this mass of the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, some of you wondering, we thought it would be the mass of the holy spirit, but how come it became a Sacred Heart. Well after Easter this Friday designated us the feast of the Sacred Heart, don’t worry the Holy Spirit and Jesus do not fight each other. They do not compete with each other. The Holy Spirit was given to us by the reason of the Lord, and the Holy Spirit will remind us of everything that Jesus has thought. So, hindi iyan magka-away, kaya huwag kayo mag-alala, don’t think that will be missing the coming of the Holy Spirit because we focused on the Sacred Heart. “Heart”, What a beautiful feast and the Heart of Jesus wounded for love of us, from this wounded heart flows many gifts and of course the greatest gift is the person of the Holy Spirit, the person of love.
When we talk of the Heart of Jesus we are not repairing of a biological part of his body. The Heart is a symbol of the total person of Jesus, in fact when we translate it in Filipino we say puso, but we understand the significant of the of the heart during the time of Christ, maybe the better translation is not puso but kalooban, loob,interiority. For among the Jews during the time of Jesus, the heart is not just the place of emotions, it’s not just a place of feelings, from the heart comes thoughts, dreams, visions so everything that comes from within the person, the deepest part of the person, what really matters that is all part of the heart and for us, I said may be better translation in Pilipino loob\kalooban, hindi lang puso kasi ang puso minsan masyadong puro nalang feelings. Emo, emo, puso dapat loob at iyan ang malalim sa Pilipino.
Ang taong mabuti sabi natin, mabuting kalooban. Kapag ang isang tao ay nasaktan masama ang loob, kapag ninakawan ka ikaw ay nilooban. And it is not just entering the house, it’s a violation of the sanctity of the home nilooban! So for us loob really captures the depths of the person and that is the whole point of education especially Catholic Education, the formation of the whole person. The formation of the loob, of the mind, of the emotion, of spontaneity, of vision, of world views, of relationships, all of them emanating from the heart loob and our feat today reminds us for Jesus himself said in the gospel “come learn from me for I am me and humble of heart”. Education forms the heart, but Jesus said, learn from my heart, learn from my person and a real way Christian education is forming minds, heart relationships, consciences, values system. So that the person, the person of the student could become more like Jesus the norm of being human is Jesus to think like Jesus, to speak like Jesus, to Feel like Jesus, to judge like Jesus, to relate like Jesus, to serve like Jesus, to cry like Jesus, to be happy like Jesus. What a novel goal the readings indicate a few elements of the heart of Jesus. 1st in the gospel Jesus said that the father has revel the mystery, the deep mystery of God to the little one, unfortunately he said to the wise and the learner. The mystery of God remain hidden. Nakakalungkot ito ha! Kung sino yung nag-aral sila, ang hindi nakakaintindi sa turo ni Jesus, sino, yung nakakaintindi kundi ang mga little one, yung mga mapag-pakumbaba, totoo yan.
Sa ordinaryong buhay kapag ang tao ang tingin sa sarili niya magaling, alam na niya lahat, iyan ang taong hindi na matututo kasi sasabihin niya” alam ko iyan madali lang yan’. Pero yung nanatiling little one, di ko pa alam iyan, magpapaturo yan, magpapagabay, matuto iyan. Matagal din akong teacher, hanggang ngayon teacher pa rin ako. Ibigay mo na sa akin ang pinaka sabihin natin mabagal slow learner, pero basta open, mapagpakumbaba gusto ko iyan sa napaka talented pero sobrang yabang. Iyang estudyanteng iyan walang natutunan pero feeling niya learner siya, walang alam pero marunong itago ang kawalang alam, kinukuha sa diction. So remain little, remain humble the humble one will aspire to learn more, the proud one will stop learning.
Para sa inyo na ang mga magulang, lolo, lola ay hindi nakaabot sa inyong pinag-aralan huwag kayo magyayabang mas malalim ang pinag-aral niyo, mas mataas ang naabot niyo dapat kayo ang mas nagpapakumbaba. The measure of true learning with is the wisdom the measure that I had been formed is that I remain humble and I do not used my education to create a great distance between me and others. Jesus tells us learn from me and I am humble of heart. Lalo na sa mga estudyante ng mga Catholic school, makita sana sa atin napakagaling mo pero sana hindi sila magulat, hindi sila mamangha sa galing niya, mamangha sila na nakakatuwa ang galing niya pero mapagpakumbaba pa rin.
Dear student’s, ang mundo natin ngayon ay nasisisra dahil sa daming mayayabang,huwag nanating dagdagan. We do not set up Catholic school in-order to produce people who pretend to be wise, who pretend to be learned and who misused their education in order to lorded over others, and promote self interest. No, the more learned you are, the more formed you are in Catholic institution the more Christ like we should be. The 2nd thing in the 1st two readings, we are told about the heart of God. God’s loves, not because Israel was the greatest of nations, not because Israel had proven that it deserves God’s love. NO, God’s love Israel because it was the smallest of all nations, this is pure love, God loving the smallest, love loving does who are helpless, God’s loving does who do not merit or deserve that love. If it is deserve maybe it’s no longer love and this is what we need right now. Citizens, Christian who could love not because I could get something in-return but who could love even the most unlovable in sociality. Meron po akong na-interview sa kasal, siyempre minsan titingnan mo kung malaya bang nagpapakasal o napipilitan lang, talaga bang pag-ibig. Minsan kapag ang sagot sa tanong na bakit siya ang pakakasalan mo, kapag madaming sagot na kasi po cute, saka po maganda po ang trabaho, madaming pera, kasi po ang pamilya niya madaming lupa, Oo kinakabahan ako. Ito ba’y talagang nagmamahal o yun po pakakasalan ay nakapasa lang sa requirements niya. Paano wala nang lupa, paano kung hindi na cute, lilipas din yan, papaano hindi na iyan cute papalitan mo na? iiwanan mo na? Kinakabahan talaga ako kapag maraming reasons.
Pero tuwang-tuwa ako noong may na-interview akong isang babae, bakit naman siya? Yung babaeng ito may pigura, parang puwedeng pang pageant. Sabi ko bakit siya ang iyong pakakasalan? Sabi father diko nga po malaman kung bakit siya, makikita po ninyo hindi naman po siya guwapo, ugali niya at ugali ko magka-iba. Hindi ko alam kung bakit siya pero parang hindi ako mabubuhay kapag wala siya, tayo na baka may pag-ibig. Ganyan tayo ini-ibig ng diyos kung nagpadala ang diyos ng listahan ng qualifications at sasabihin paki- check nga para malaman ko kung puwede kitang mahalin? Wala sa atin ang puwedeng mahalin, but the heart of Jesus knows how to love everyone specially does considered by the us the little one.
Sana sa ating Catholic education and Christian education we get information, values, service, and relationship. We learn how to respect every human life, every human person, we learn how to love and serve every person, not only does who past in our criteria and does who are to our natural liking. Ang mundo natin ngayon ang daming discrimination, ang daming blaming, takot na takot sa ganitong tao, takot na takot sa ganitong region? Wala pa naman nakakausap na tao na galing sa ganitong grupo, ang daming takot na takot na. Before we encounter a living person we already have a wall, please Jesus died for all, Jesus heart was wounded and was open so that all people may entry the love of God. We learn from his heart, we learn from his love broken but because broken is open to universal love let that be a mark of Christian and Catholic formation and education.
Para sa mga teachers and administrators, just like the students were invited by Jesus learn from me, may our hearts be formed according to the heart of Jesus and whatever subject matter you are handling, your students forget their lesson but they will remember you. Sana ang maalala nila sa inyo hindi lamang and tinuro ninyo sa Geometry, hindi lamang ang tinuro ninyo sa subject, sana ang ala-ala nila ay si Sir, si ma’am, si father sila ang nagpadama sa akin na ako ay kamahal-mahal, in my limitation, in my weakness I found love, I was able to enter of a beautiful the heart of my teacher, the heart of my principal, the heart that beats that like the heart of Jesus.
A few days ago I meet some of my elementary and high school teachers again, nagulat ako buhay pa yung iba, ang natatandaaan ko lang ay they treasure us, they treasure me, they remember me, specially our broken companions and that is the best school the Heart of Jesus. Ang kalooban ni Hesus, duon tayo natututo learn from me. Let every School kahit hindi Sacred Heart ang pangalan let every really be the heart of Jesus, were we learn how to be human, learning to from great teacher who is humble.
