Gospel Reading for July 17, 2024 – Matthew 11: 25-27

MEASURE UP

At that time Jesus exclaimed: “I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.”

————

Jesus, being God’s son, knew God’s will when he chose his disciples. They were ordinary men from different walks of life: fishermen, a tax collector, others were even activists. None of them trained under the scribes or were Pharisees so it was understandable why so many times, they could not understand what Jesus taught them even after his resurrection. They began to understand all that Jesus had taught them after the Holy Spirit descended on them on Pentecost. From that time on, they were no longer the ordinary men that Jesus picked. They became THE CHOSEN from among ordinary men, who were to preach the Gospel up to the ends of the earth.

Some of us may think that we do not MEASURE UP to the expectations of what a preacher of the Gospel should be because we lead ordinary lives or believe we are ordinary people. As no one has the monopoly of the Holy Spirit, all of us baptized Christians are also CHOSEN to preach the Gospel to the ends of the earth, most especially in the way we live. We just need to give our SINCERE RESPONSE and the Holy Spirit will do the rest for us.

Come, Holy Spirit, fill us with your wisdom and strength!
