Suportado ng Seeds of Hope Society Philippines Inc. (SOHSPH Inc.) ang panawagan ng Masungi Georeserve Foundation laban sa binabalak na pagbawi sa kasunduan para sa Masungi Geopark Project sa Baras, Rizal.
Ayon sa grupo, ang planong pagbawi ng Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) sa 2017 Memorandum of Agreement ay magiging dahilan ng pagpasok ng iba’t ibang mapaminsalang gawain sa protected area.
Nangangamba ang SOHSPH Inc. na mapinsala ng talamak na landgrabbing, quarrying, swimming pool resorts, at iba pa ang itinuturing na award-winning reforestation project na may lawak na 3,000-ektaryang lupain at limestone formation.
“We strongly believe that protecting the threatened biodiversity in the mountains of Baras, Rizal, Philippines is of utmost importance, and Masungi Georeserve have been providing the necessary protection of the flora and fauna above and beyond. The planned cancellation of the memorandum with DENR could destroy the environmental protection efforts the organization have made all over the years,” pahayag ng SOHSPH Inc.
Una nang nagpahayag ng suporta ang development at advocacy arm ng Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines hinggil sa plano ng DENR sa Masungi Georeserve.
Sinabi ni Caritas Philippines vice president, San Carlos Bishop Gerardo Alminaza na ngayon ang panahong higit na kailangan ang suporta ng pamahalaan sa mga inisyatibo para sa pangangalaga sa kalikasan, sa halip na maging hadlang para maisakatuparan ito.
Hinamon naman ng SOHSPH Inc. ang DENR na maging bukas sa ibang paraan ng negosasyon at pakikipag-usap para sa pagsasaayos ng MOA, na una nang binanggit ni DENR Secretary Tony Yulo-Loyzaga noong mahalal na kalihim dalawang taon na ang nakakalipas.
“As environmental conservation organization, SOHSPH Inc. is calling upon the public to stand together against this ill-advised decision and fight for the preservation of the Masungi Geopark Project,” saad ng grupo.
