Pinaigting ng Church People – Workers Solidartiy (CWS) ang pakikiisa sa apela ng mga manggagawa sa employers at pamahalaan na tiyaking ligtas ang mga lugar ng paggawa mula sa matinding init.
Ayon kay CWS National Chairman San Carlos Bishop Gerardo Alminaza, nararapat tiyakin sa anumang banta ng kapahamakan dulot ng matinding init ang mga manggagawa.
Hinimok ng Obispo ang mga employer na pangalagaan ang health at safety ng mga manggagawa gayundin ang Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) na mahigpit na ipatupad ang Occupational Safety and Health Development (IOSHD) Standard.
“CWS supports workers’ heat safety demands in the light of the recent high heat index experienced in the country. Amidst record-high temperatures brought about by the effect of climate change, CWS urges employers and DOLE to take decisive action to safeguard workers’ health and safety. Hot temperatures and low compliance with occupational safety and health standards make workers more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses such as heat strokes,” ayon sa mensaheng ipinadala ni Bishop Alminaza sa Radio Veritas.
Sinabi ni Bishop Alminaza na ang pagpapatupad ng IOSHD ay nakaayon sa katuruan ng simbahan at apela ni Pope Francis sa mga employer na tiyakin ang kaligtasan at kapakanan ng mga manggagawa sa mga lugar ng paggawa.
Inihayag ng Obispo na sa pamamagitan nito ay mapangalagaan ang dignidad ng mga manggagawa a mapabuti ang kalagayan ng labor sector na may malaking ambag sa pagpapaunlad ng ekonomiya ng bansa.
Panawagan ni Bishop Alminaza ang pagpapatupad ng sampung polisiya na makakatulong sa mga manggagawang maibsan ang pasakit na dulot ng matinding tag-init sa kanilang mga trabaho.
“In this regard, CWS supports the Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Development’s (IOSHD) “10 heat safety demands”: 1. Heat breaks that are paid and compensable; 2. Education and advocacy campaigns to prevent heat-related illnessesshould be conducted by companies; 3. Assessment of health conditions and medical check-ups for workers ; 4. Timely, thorough and regular inspections of companies to assess their compliance with health and safety measures; 5. Shaded rest areas should be provided for workers; 6. Adjust work hours and ensure that working hours are maintained; 7. Free, adequate and accessible water supply; 8. Effective Ventilation; 9. Temperature-appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE); 10. Yes to workers’ consultations!,” ayon pa sa mensaheng ipinadala ni Bishop Alminaza.
Inaasahan ng PAGASA Weather Forecasting Center na sa patuloy ng summer season at El Niño phenomenon aabot ng hanggang 44-Degree Celcius ang pinakamainit na heat index na maranasan ng mga mamamayan sa ibat-ibang bahagi ng bansa.
