Sinuportahan ng Diocese of San Carlos ang pagsusulong ng Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines na total ban sa online gambling.
Ayon kay San Carlos Bishop Gerardo Alminaza, ang online gambling ay isang ‘Silent Virus’ na sinisira ang lipunan, pamilya at buhay ng mga Pilipino.
Iginiit ng Obispo na dahil sa pagkalulong sa sugal na bukod sa sinisira ang mental health ay nasasayanang ang kita na dapat inilalaan sa mga mas makabuluhang bagay katulad ng pagkain o pondo para sa kanilang mga pamilya.
“Online gambling is a “silent virus”—a social and moral pandemic that quietly spreads across households, parishes, and communities, enslaving hearts and distorting values. It is no longer a private vice but a public health and moral crisis, targeting especially the youth, the poor, and the vulnerable. Its effects are real and devastating: addiction, depression, debt, disintegration of families, and the erosion of human dignity,” ayon sa mensaheng ipinadala ni Bishop Alminaza sa Radyo Veritas.
Mariing ipinapanawagan ni Bishop ni Bishop Alminaza sa pamahalaan na tuluyang ipagbawal ang lahat ng uri ng online gambling.
Pinagpahigpitan din ng Obispo sa pamahalaan ang polisiya sa mga online cash transfer, online banking at electronic wallet accounts.
Umaapela din ang Obispo na protektahan ang mga kabataan, paaralan at insititusyon sa pagbabawal ng paglabas ng anumang advertisments sa online gambling.
“We affirm the CBCP’s call to action and raise our collective voice against a system that thrives on the exploitation of human weakness for profit. As a local Church, we call for; The immediate banning and criminalization of all forms of online gambling; Stricter regulation of online platforms, payment systems, and e-wallets that make gambling easily accessible; The protection of our young people from the manipulative advertising and normalization of gambling in media; A whole-of-society response—government, Church, schools, and families—to address gambling as a spiritual, mental, and economic affliction; And a pastoral response of mercy, support, and accompaniment to those already affected,” ayon pa sa mensaheng ipinadala ni Bishop Alminaza sa Radyo Veritas.
Sa kakatapos lamang na Philippine Conference on New Evangelization 11 ay hindi tinanggap at kinundena ni Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) President Kalookan Bishop Pablo Virgilio Cardinal David ang paliwanag ng Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) na gawing legal ang online gambling.
Nanindigan si Cardinal David na hindi makakabuti para sa pamumuhay ng mga Pilipino, higit na para sa mga kabataan ang pagkalulong sa sugal o online gambling.
