In celebration of Global Hand Washing Day, the National Secretariat for Social Action (NASSA)/Caritas Philippines together with its counterparts in the different dioceses all over the Philippines held various hygiene promotion activities in typhoon-hit communities.

The activities which are done in schools and day care centers across the Philippines include lectures on proper hand washing, turnover of hand washing facilities, distribution of hygiene kits, film showing, poster making, theater shows, games and parades.

“This early, we want to teach children the importance of proper hand washing so they can become hygiene champions and educate other children as well in their community,” NASSA/Caritas Philippines Executive Secretary Fr. Edwin Gariguez said.

Gariguez added that the hygiene promotion activities will also prevent diarrheal diseases in children, and raise awareness about the benefits of proper hygiene.

Those who joined this year’s celebration led by NASSA/Caritas Philippines are the dioceses currently implementing the Catholic Church’s Yolanda rehabilitation program.

These are the social action centers and the relief and rehabilitation units from the dioceses of Leyte, Samar, Easter Samar, Cebu, Palawan, Capiz, Iloilo, Antique and Aklan.

The Diocese of Sorsogon, which is implementing together with NASSA/Caritas Philippines an early recovery project for survivors of Typhoon Nona, also joined the celebration.

The activities for the Global Hand Washing Day have started since last week.

Global Hand Washing Day is an annual global advocacy dedicated to increase awareness and understand the importance of proper hand washing to prevent diseases and save lives.

NASSA/Caritas Philippines is the social action arm of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) currently implementing the Catholic Church’s largest three-year rehabilitation program for survivors of Super Typhoon Yolanda.

It also implements other early recovery projects such as typhoon Nona, which hit the Philippines last year.
