Manila,Philippines– Malugod na pinapasasalamatan ng Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines ang Austrian Bishops sa pagkondena sa laganap na paglabag sa mga karapatang-pantao sa Pilipinas.
Sa kanyang liham sa Austrian Bishops Conference, ipinaabot ni CBCP President Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas ang kasiyahan at pasasalamat ng C-B-C-P sa mga Obispo ng Austria sa kanilang pakikiisa sa pagkondena sa umuusbong na kultura ng kamatayan sa Pilipinas.
Tiniyak ni Archbishop Villegas sa Austrian Bishops na hindi mapapatahimik at mananahimik ang Simbahang Katolika sa Pilipinas sa kanyang prophetic role na maghatid at magturo ng ebanghelyo ng buhay.
“The Lord blessed us today through your letter of March 17 and the encouraging message of solidarity from our brother bishops in the Austrian Bishops Conference. In the exercise of our prophetic role to teach the Gospel of Life, we know we are also called to be martyrs for the same Lord and His teachings. Indeed, the face of God is mercy and this teaching is becoming harder and harder to proclaim in a creeping culture of death. Hiniling din ni Archbishop Villegas ang panalangin ng mga Obispo ng Austria sa patuloy na paglaban ng Simbahang Katolika ng Pilipinas sa pagbabalik ng parusang kamatayan at mga nagsusulong sa kultura ng kamatayan.

Kapaloob din sa “solidarity letter” ng Austrian Bishops ang kanilang pagtutol sa muling pagsusulong ng death penalty bill sa bansa at ang pagpapababa ng age of criminal liability.
Nilalaman din ng “solidarity letter” ang panawagan ng Austrian Bishops Conference sa mga political decision makers at European institutions sa Austria na gamitin ang kanilang political powers at diplomatic channels para mabigyang tugon ang patuloy na pagtaas ng kaso ng extra-judicial killings at human rights violation sa war on drugs ng Duterte administration.
“At the same time two drafts of laws are currently under review: The reintroduction of the death penalty and the reduction of the age of criminal responsibility. The Filipino Bishops’ Conference is strongly opposing these draft laws. The Austrian Bishops’ Conference solidarily shares the fundamental concerns of the Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines and supports their firm advocacy for justice. This is why the Bishops of Austria call upon political decision makers in Austria to commit themselves to the respect of human rights in the Philippines. Nakasaad din sa liham ng Austrian Bishops Conference na pangangailangan ng maraming boses ng pagtutol sa paglabag sa karapatang pantao sa Pilipinas upang maiwasan ang culture of impunity.
“Declaration concerning the human rights situation on the Philippines when Rodrigo Duterte’s term of presidency began in June 2016, several thousand extrajudicial killings of alleged criminals were committed within only a few weeks following his appeal to take violent action against drug dealers and drug consumers. Ecclesial leaders, together with national NGOs and international networks, repeatedly call attention to this alarming situation. Beside this war against drugs as it was declared by President Duterte, also violence against human rights activists, indigenous activists and journalists is on the rise. The lack of condemnation of these human rights violations leads to a culture of impunity.”pahayag ng Austrian Bishops
