Gospel Reading for August 02, 2026 – Matthew 14: 13-21

CHARITY KNOWS NO LIMITS

When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick. When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said, “This is a deserted place and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.” Jesus said to them, “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves.” But they said to him, “Five loaves and two fish are all we have here.” Then he said, “Bring them here to me,” and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds. They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over— twelve wicker baskets full. Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children.

When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew by himself to a deserted place. What did he do there? We can only imagine. Perhaps he wept for John, who was not only his cousin but also his precursor. Perhaps he also felt the weight of knowing that he, too, would one day suffer a martyr’s death. Yet none of these prevented him from fulfilling the mission the Father had entrusted to him. Perhaps this is what he meant when he said in Luke 9:60, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”

The Kingdom of God must be the FOREMOST PRIORITY of every Christian. We have all been entrusted with the mission of being prophets through our witness, kings through our service, and priests through our prayers. We are also called to go the extra mile, never placing limits on what we are willing to give. In today’s Gospel, Jesus could have accepted the apostles’ suggestion to dismiss the crowds and let them find food for themselves. Instead, he showed them that, for Christians, CHARITY KNOWS NO LIMITS.

Lord Jesus, may your acts of love continually inspire us to become more like you each day.
