Fr. Cielito R. Almazan, OFM, Minister Provincial of the Franciscan Province of San Pedro Bautista, was elected as new Chair of the influential Association of Major Religious Superiors Men in the Philippines (AMRSMP). The election was held during the convention of men superiors at Maryridge Retreat House in Tagaytay City from June 28 – July 1, 2016.
Elected together with Almazan is the Claretian Provincial Superior Fr. Eduardo Apungan, CMF as Vice Chair. While, Br. Jose Mari Jimenez, FSC; Fr. Anthony Paul Bicomong, SDB; Fr. Copernicus Perez Jr., CSsR; Fr. Joseph Matitu, SSS and Fr. Antonio Moreno, SJ were elected as board members.
The theme of the convention is “Merciful Like the Father: The Challenge to Men Religious Today.” The issue of Climate Change and its impacts to society served as one of the main issues discussed during the meeting. Fr. Dexter Toledo, OFM, National Coordinator of the Ecological Justice Interfaith Movement (ECOJIM), discussed Ecological Justice in the Year of Mercy during the convention. While Prof. Tony Lavina, a member of the Government panel during the COP21 Meeting held in Paris, presented a Philipine Situationer. Mr. Gerry Arances, Ms. Yolanda Esguerra and Ms. Jessica Bercilla also shared on the impacts of Climate Change and best practices on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management.
