Nakiisa ang Sweden sa paninindigan ng Pilipinas sa inaangking West Philippine Sea ng China.
Ito ang tiniyak ni Swedish Ambassador to the Philippines Annika Thunborg sa kaniyang courtesy call kay Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr.
Pinasalamatan naman ni Teodoro ang pakikiisa ng Sweden sa desisyon ng 2016 Permanent Court of Arbitration na bahagi ang West Philippine Sea ng Exclusive Economic Zone ng Pilipinas.
“Exchanging regional security situation updates, Ambassador Thunborg noted the developments in the South China Sea (SCS)/West Philippine Sea (WPS) and conveyed Sweden’s support for the Philippines’ position and upholding the rules-based international order. Welcoming the support from Sweden and other like-minded partners, Secretary Teodoro hoped for a global consensus on the 2016 Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) ruling on the SCS and underscored the importance of the Philippines’ enforcement of its sovereign rights over its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ),” mensahe ng DND sa Radio Veritas.
Inilahad din ng dalawang pinuno ang matatag na pagkakaisa ng Pilipinas at Sweden sa pagsusulong ng pangangalaga ng kapayapaan at seguridad.
Bukas din ang dalawang panig sa posibilidad ng joint exercises ng kanilang defense forces.
