Radio Veritas 846 will have a special programming in support with the 10th Earth Hour on Saturday, March 19, 2016 from 8:00pm to 10:00pm.
As part of its participation to the Earth Hour movement that promotes climate mitigation initiatives, Radio Veritas will broadcast a special program for Earth Hour 2016, “Ang Banal na Oras”, to be moderated by Fr. John Leydon, Convenor of the Global Catholic Climate Movement. Caloocan Bishop Emeritus Deogracias Iñiguez will be the guest of the program and will talk about Laudato Si, the encyclical letter of Pope Francis on care for our common home.
Archbishop of Manila, His Eminence Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle expressed his support to earth hour and urged the faithful to take part in the movement.
“Inaanyayahan ko po kayong lahat na makilahok sa Earth Hour na magaganap sa taong ito, patayin po natinang lahat ng ating mga appliances at mga gamit na gumagamit ng electricity, ito po ay para makapagpahinga anga tin pong mundo, at sabi nga po ni Pope Francis, kailangan natin ng Ecological Justice, kailangan ding maramdaman ng ating kalikasan ang ating mabuting pakikitungo, bigyan po natin siya ng kaunting pahinga. Earth Hour March 19, 2016, wala po muna tayong electrical appliances nang makapagpahinga ang mundo,” Cardinal Tagle appealed.
Started from a symbolic switch-off event in Sydney, Australia in 2007, the World Wide Fund for Nature’s Earth Hour has become the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment mobilizing hundreds of millions of people in over 7000 cities and 172 countries.
Since then, WWF and Earth Hour teams worldwide are using the movement to raise support and funds for access to renewable energy, protection of wildlife and their habitats, building sustainable livelihoods and driving climate-friendly legislation and policy.
The Philippines was the first country in Asia to join the movement in 2008. Now, the Philippines has been heralded as the “Earth Hour Hero Country” for topping Earth Hour participation levels from 2009-2013 contributing over 1,600 of the world’s 7,000 Earth Hour hubs last year.
The Earth Hour Philippines’ main switch-off event will be held at the Quezon City Memorial Circle from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM on March 19.
The Earth Hour Philippines Director Atty. Gia Ibay, urged supporters to switch-off and shine a light on climate action from 8:30 to 9:30pm on Saturday.
“Stationary bikes will partially power this year’s event to show that united, Pinoys can light up this country with their collective energy. Together, anything is possible,” Atty. Ibay explained.
The social media community can also show their support to Earth Hour by using the hashtags #EarthHourPhilippines, #ChangeClimateChange, and #RenewableisDoable.
