Former Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman Perfecto “Jun” Yasay, former congressman of the Lone District of Biliran Atty. Glenn Ang – Chong, and President and Founder of Barcelona Academy System Schools, Alvin Barcelona recently shared the qualities of a persuasive leader that the electorates should consider during the eighth Veritas Servant Leadership Halalan Forum 2016.
Yasay said that sincerity is the core of persuasion. The honesty of a candidate will persuade the voting public.
“When we look at the power of persuasion, ang core nyan ay ‘yung sincerity, ‘yung tunay na paniniwala ng isang government official na ‘yung idea nya, ‘yung proyekto nya, ‘yung concept nya ay tama, makatotohanan at karapat-dapat. You will persuade people on the basis of your honest belief na itong ginagawa mong ito ay tama at para sa kabutihan ng bayan,” Yasay explained.
Atty. Chong added two more qualities about persuasion which he thinks are really important to consider in choosing the right candidate.
“I have three qualities about persuasion. One thing that I really wanna see from a leader is vision, that’s the first quality I would look for a leader. Pero kelangan you have concrete steps how you will achieve your vision. The second one is sincerity, na gaano katotoo ang taong ito. Pangatlo, delivery, hindi ‘yung hanggang promise ka lang you have to deliver, “Atty. Chong added.
For Barcelona, modelling is the best way to persuade.
Atty Chong also believed that image building is necessary to persuade the public because it could show their credibility.
“The image is important sa politiko because it conveys his credibility para may connect sya dun sa mga botante. If you wear the same clothes they wear mas malapit ka sa kanila, they can identify themselves sa inyo,” Atty. Chong stressed.
However, he warned the voting public that the image projected by the candidates during the election may not be sincere.
“But, para sa mga botante, image building is not necessarily sincere. Pwedeng porma lang yan. Kaya dapat alamin talaga natin ang kandidatong nasa harap natin,” Atty. Chong added.
In support to what Atty. Chong have said, Barcelona suggested that looking on the track records of the candidates would help the voting public to choose the sincere candidate.
The panelists also agreed that populist view is a powerful tool to persuade the voting public, but they warned the electorates that it could not be genuine and just a part of their campaign propaganda.
Dahil pagsinasabi mong populist view ‘yun ang gusto ng popularity and there’s power in numbers,” Yasay said.
“Populist views that politicians will espouse, mascara lang ‘yun e. Hindi mo alam kung ano ba talagang stand niya dun e, kasi he will try to cater to all,” Atty. Chong added.
For his part, Barcelona said that a candidate should stand on what he believes not on what the majority wants.
